At the weekend I replaced my 9 energy saver Megaman (11W fluorescent) spot lights in the kitchen with some new 6W COB LED spotlights. My decision was made because I was tired of waiting for 30 seconds plus for these lamps to warm up and it never seemed to live up to the old 50W GU10 lamps that were originally installed. I chose the day white lamps as I like to have bright white light which shows everything in its natural colour, rather than the warm white light which is nice but always feels, well, sort of dim. It’s ok in the right environment but I feel the kitchen should just be bright! Was I disappointed? No… the light is fantastic and there’s no perceptible delay when switching on, just instantaneous light! I even went as far as installing an extra lamp fitting in a recessed area of the kitchen (which was fun, took about 3 hours to get the cable run into place!) and fitted another COB LED lamp, and it was worth it.

So from 450W to 99W to 60W (including the extra light fitting)… now I’m using the same wattage as the 60W tungsten lamp that was probably originally fitted in the dim (no pun intended), distant past, but it’s worth it. The age old single lamp hanging from its pendant would never have lit up the kitchen as brightly as the latest lamp technology.
